The Ruined Land – Chronicles of the Pale #3

Exiled from the Pale, humachine Hector has found a home with the tribes Outside.

Or has he?

While the canini struggle to care for the human twins, Feather travels Broad Plain to reunite them with their father. But his own family is scattered as the Pale sends out its terrifying army and the land itself buckles beneath them.

Can anyone survive the ruination of the land?

In this gripping conclusion to the Chronicles of the Pale, the citizens of the mighty Pale have as much to lose as the communities of the Outside.

I did not want to write this review as when I did, I knew that this was the end of the series. This was a series that I was invested in, throughout the series I was following four groups trying to survive an ever-changing world of the Pales.

Continuing on from Broad Plain Darkening, mother nature is making things hard and for a lot of the book, my heart was in my mouth as the characters came up against danger after danger. At times like that I was reading faster and faster and I wanted to know who had survived. One scene, in particular, was the scene between Jasper and his dad.

As I have read the others in the series, I recognised the characters instantly and as I continued, I was silently cheering when I came across a character I liked as I knew that they had survived. The addition of characters helped explain what was going on with the Pale and the hidden dangers.

As you are reading this story, you have the feeling that you there, following the groups trying to survive and this down to the descriptive style of the author. Like in the other books there is heartbreak but also hope. The Ruined Land gave closure to this series and whilst I was sad that the series was finished, I am glad that I had the pleasure of following these characters.

With so many characters I would love to see some spin-offs of the series and if the author chose to do this, I would definitely purchase them. My first choice would be Feather as I would enjoy reading more about his travels across the Pale.

Broad Plain Darkening – Chronicles of the Pale #2

The safe world of the Pale is under threat.

Inside the policosmos, the new Regent Adaeze strives for dominance over the all-powerful Senior Forecaster, but the Pale’s humachine citizens are unaware that their city is close to collapse.

Outside on Broad Plain, the exiled human Hector undertakes a dangerous trek to find a safe haven for the orphaned twins.

How can anyone survive as their world shifts underneath them?

Following on from The Pale, Broad Plain Darkening starts answering the questions that were left after finishing book 1 and the people are slowly rebuilding their lives.

As before as a reader you get to follow each group and find out how each group is moving forward and surviving in this dangerous world. This book concentrated more on the Tribesman and the Canini which I was happy reading about as they were my 2 favourite groups and it did show the difference between the group’s actions. I did have my own idea about which groups I wanted to survive and is it wrong that I did not like the residents of the Pale. Politics in certain groups play a big part in the group dynamics and as a reader, you can see exactly what game certain characters are playing to shift the balance of power and it does get you wondering how much these games are going to affect the world’s development.

As before I have my favourite characters and I really enjoyed finding more about Feather and you can understand why he has been chosen as a messenger, he has a way with words and whilst he gets his point across, he does it very diplomatic.

Whilst there are a lot of characters there is a character list at the beginning of the book which will help you keep track of who’s who, but after reading The Pale I had no problems remembering all the characters and the dynamics in their group. There are some new characters that make an appearance which has made me curious on the direction that book three will go. I have an idea what I want to happen but I will just have to wait to find out.

I am really enjoying reading this series as I am invested in the character’s wellbeing. If you are looking for a dystopian read that feels real than you cannot go wrong with this series
