Injections of Insanity by Lorraine Mace

I am pleased to review Injections of Insanity, the third in the DI Sterling series, written by Lorraine Mace.

 Injections of Insanity

Detective Inspector Paolo Sterling has just six weeks to solve a series of murders by insulin injection, with nothing to connect the victims except the manner of death and a note left at each crime scene.

The murderer, determined to avenge a wrong from many years earlier, gets close to his prey by assuming various identities.

Can Paolo win in his race against the pretender?

6 months after Children in Chains and DI Sterling is up against again. With a lot of changes in his home life and at work, he has to find the link between the victims, before he can catch the killer.

Whilst this story was not as dark as the previous two in this series, it felt more intense. As DI Sterling investigated the case, he kept hitting brick wall after brick wall and you could sense he was up against the clock the catch the killer. The use of insulin was a unique weapon of choice and I learnt that something that would save lives would kill others horrifically.

Whilst Sterling was still the star of the show, this story showcases the other members of Sterling team and the more I read of the series the more DS Dave Johnson is growing on me. CC was still full of life and the new member adds another dynamic to the team and I wonder how far this team can go. Like the other books you follow Paolo as he tries and solves the case and he finds out more about the victims. If you are like me you start to guess who is behind the murders and as you read the story you realise time after time how wrong you are.

As usual this can be read as a standalone, but I would encourage readers new to Lorraine Mace to read the others first as you not only get involved in the crimes but also into the character’s personal lives.  I want this series to carry on for ever and hope I don’t have to wait too long for another DI Sterling story.

Children in Chains by Lorraine Mace

May 30, 2019 - 5:09 am No Comments

My turn has arrived for Children in Chains blog tour, 2nd in the DI Paolo Sterling series by Lorraine Mace.

 Children in Chains

Detective Inspector Paolo Sterling is determined to shut down the syndicate flooding Bradchester’s streets with young prostitutes.

When a child is murdered, Paolo becomes aware of a sinister network of abusers spread across Europe, and spanning all levels of society. But Joey, the shadowy leader of the gang, always seems to be one step ahead in the chase.

Has Paolo come up against a criminal he cannot defeat?

Following a few months after Retriever of Souls, Paolo is still his ex-wife’s no1 enemy. Katy is still in trauma after her kidnapping and showing no sign of recovery, but when a child is found dead from an overdose and signs of abuse, DI Paolo has to put his family on hold.

If you have read book 1 then a lot of the characters were familiar. Whilst Paolo is still the star of the story, you learn more about the other offices on the case.  Dave Johnson is becoming a fine officer, but as you read this story, you soon learn why he finds this case so hard. CC, the only woman on the case, is her usual confident self and with her wild hair colourings, she did give some light relief to the story. Dr Carter a new character, gives more of an insight into Paolo’s family life and just what a struggle he had with normality.

As in book one, you are hit with graphic scenes from the onset. The story of child trafficking and abuse is not an easy subject to read and whilst you hope it would not happen, you only have to turn on the news to see that it is going on. Saying that the author does write about this difficult subject with sympathy and sensitivity. As a mom to a daughter, my heart went out to all the girls.

From the start you know who is behind the trafficking and the person behind the abuse, the story follows Paolo as he tries to solve the case. This story was well plotted and I enjoyed the intricate plan of the trafficking explaining how the gang to pull it off.

This was another great gritty read which was riveting to the end. With Injection of Insanity out soon, I wonder how many more harrowing cases DI Paolo Sterling can solve. A must read for any fans of dark gritty thrillers.

Retriever of Souls by Lorraine Mace

May 12, 2019 - 5:23 am No Comments

It is my turn on the Retriever of Souls blog tour, a new to me author but when I read the blurb it grabbed my attention.

Retriever of Souls

Brought up believing that sex is the devil’s work, a killer only finds release once he has saved his victim’s souls. Abiding by his vision, he marks them as his. A gift to guide his chosen ones on the rightful path to redemption.

Detective Inspector Paolo Sterling is out to stop him, but Paolo has problems of his own. Hunting down the killer as the death toll rises, the lines soon blur between Paolo’s personal and professional lives.

So here is my thoughts on the book.

The story follows DI Sterling as he tries to stop a dangerous killer. When the mutilated body is found and IDed, he thought he had got his man, but trying to make a case against him was harder than he thought. Not only had he got more bodies turning up, he was also trying to get used to being separated and still being a good dad to his teenage daughter.

The story alternates between DI Sterling and the killer, without being confusing. Reading the killer perspective shows you just how sadistic and troubled the killer was. As you follow DI Sterling you realise just how much of a mess his home life and when more pressure is put on him by his wife, it is a wonder he doesn’t crack. His working relationship with his partner DS Dave Johnson starts off a bit rocky and it did come across as he did not want to work with him, but as the story continues you see him more as a mentor.

As soon as you start the book you know what you are getting into. From the 1st scene, you are taken on a dark journey. There are some topics and scenes that some readers may find disturbing but this adds to the grittiness of the story. The hunt for the killer is hidden with twists and red herrings, that kept me guessing to the end. The plot was well thought out and was fast paced.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers. As soon as I finished it, I one clicked the 2nd in the series and have pre-ordered the 3rd.
