Broad Plain Darkening – Chronicles of the Pale #2

The safe world of the Pale is under threat.

Inside the policosmos, the new Regent Adaeze strives for dominance over the all-powerful Senior Forecaster, but the Pale’s humachine citizens are unaware that their city is close to collapse.

Outside on Broad Plain, the exiled human Hector undertakes a dangerous trek to find a safe haven for the orphaned twins.

How can anyone survive as their world shifts underneath them?

Following on from The Pale, Broad Plain Darkening starts answering the questions that were left after finishing book 1 and the people are slowly rebuilding their lives.

As before as a reader you get to follow each group and find out how each group is moving forward and surviving in this dangerous world. This book concentrated more on the Tribesman and the Canini which I was happy reading about as they were my 2 favourite groups and it did show the difference between the group’s actions. I did have my own idea about which groups I wanted to survive and is it wrong that I did not like the residents of the Pale. Politics in certain groups play a big part in the group dynamics and as a reader, you can see exactly what game certain characters are playing to shift the balance of power and it does get you wondering how much these games are going to affect the world’s development.

As before I have my favourite characters and I really enjoyed finding more about Feather and you can understand why he has been chosen as a messenger, he has a way with words and whilst he gets his point across, he does it very diplomatic.

Whilst there are a lot of characters there is a character list at the beginning of the book which will help you keep track of who’s who, but after reading The Pale I had no problems remembering all the characters and the dynamics in their group. There are some new characters that make an appearance which has made me curious on the direction that book three will go. I have an idea what I want to happen but I will just have to wait to find out.

I am really enjoying reading this series as I am invested in the character’s wellbeing. If you are looking for a dystopian read that feels real than you cannot go wrong with this series
